How we work

CHT runs residential and non-residential therapeutic environments for adults with severe and enduring mental health problems, predominantly a psychosis and homeless and psychologically traumatized ex-service personnel. CHT's therapeutic programme provides a structure orientated towards recovery, training, employment and increased  independence.

an integrated psychological and psychiatric approach

Group and individual psychotherapy, combining a psychoanalytic model, psychosocial interventions (PSI) and group cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), are used to help clients find methods of coping with persistent distress. This has a dramatic impact on their relapse rates, reduces future hospital admissions and normally makes possible significant reductions in medication.

An integrated psychological and psychiatric approach is made possible through close cooperation with statutory services. This includes the use and careful monitoring of medication. Psychiatrists, community psychiatric nurses, clinical psychologists, social workers, probation officers, all contribute their expertise. CHT therapists convene three to six monthly meetings which provide an opportunity to review progress with each client and revise therapeutic care plans. CHT psychotherapists also contribute to the CPA reviews called by the statutory services. Clients are involved in creating their care plans and in chairing their reviews.

training, education and employment

In CHT rehabilitation goes hand in hand with psychotherapy, both of which are orientated towards recovery and increasing independence. Training for work is a key element in our therapeutic approach. As soon as a client is admitted to one of our communities their training needs are assessed and made part of their care plan. Through close co-operation with other organizations we provide training and work placements for our clients. Additionally, CHT psychotherapists work closely with Day Hospital and Day Centre staff on joint programmes for new clients in transition between hospital and the community, and with colleges of further education.
