The training and support needs of our staff are of paramount importance. For this reason CHT provides its staff with a thorough and in depth training in all aspects of effective psychotherapy.
Staff are enrolled on our training programme which this year has been upgraded to post graduate level and includes a Masters degree and the possibility of staff moving into a Professional Doctorate programme. The course is accredited by Middlesex University.
In the course students examine the biological, social and psychological factors in relation to psychiatric disorders, learning from theoretical, practical and experiential contexts. The emphasis is on equipping staff to use a group approach within a multidisciplinary context. This includes developing awareness of the needs of those suffering from severe mental ill health and the impact that such work can have on staff, a working theoretical knowledge of a range of psychotherapeutic interventions both at the level of the individual and the group and their application in clinical practice, and an understanding of the theory and practice of the therapeutic community and the ethical dimension of therapeutic work within the community.
As part of the course staff complete a psychiatric placement with their local Community Mental Health Team or psychiatric hospital. In addition to CHT's small but expanding library students also have access to the library facilities at the Cassel Hospital.
CHT's training programme attracts students from Britain and overseas, as well as from professionals within the statutory and voluntary sector who work in therapeutic environments.
